Editors VS Apps

Although the title suggests a showdown, this is a settled debate. Editors will never be replaced by Editing Apps, and I will let you know why.

Why Editing Apps will never replace editors:

Reason #1- Context

This is the crucial difference between great Editors and apps.
Of course! Yes. Editing apps will get grammatical and spelling errors in an instant sure, but they can’t read context. At least not as well as humans and will not flag correct words used incorrectly. They might, but will the accuracy be the same?
Example: “Read or not, here I come”.
In the phrase above, there are no spelling mistakes, and an app will not detect errors in it. – The Hemingway Editor gave it a total passBut a human will, and quite fast.
Apps like Grammarly, Hemingway Editor – GREAT APP -, Ginger, and other famous apps, will help detect spelling mistakes. When it comes to context, you need a good old human to do that. Here are editors that will help you more than any app ever will.

Reason #2- Logic, Coherence and Sense

Once again, apps will not help you when it comes to logic when you are writing.

Example: “Bananas are blue and yellow, thus the sun is paper in the lake of Midas.

– Another pass from Hemingway… XD –
You can write a thousand sentences like that. As long as the grammatical and spelling rules are respected, – and your sentences aren’t long – you’ll pass with flying colors on apps. But with an Editor?

Reason #3 – Plot

As a writer, you need to make sure that the plot of your story is GREAT, solid and has value to the reader. Only Beta Readers and Editors can make sure that that is possible. Apps won’t. No matter how “intelligent” they may become. But does this mean that you cannot use apps ? Of course not! And here’s why, and how.

How to better use Editing Apps

It’s simple. Use an editing app in your manuscript to:

  • Clean spelling mistakes – Grammarly is great for that
  • Make sure that your story is easy to read – Hemingway Editor 3.0 is FANTASTIC in that

Well, that’s pretty much it. After using these apps, send your manuscript to an editor and he/she will thank you for making their life easier.

  1. Oh yeah, I think that these editing apps are useless without the proper human supervision. I did use AI to write an entire article before, and it did surprisingly well, but at the end of the day, that also required a human to decide on the final flow. Anyway, thanks for this post!
