J-Man is one of those artists that makes you ask: “Why?” (In a good way).
Prone to the creepy, the scary and the digital, J-man makes unique pieces that make you stop and take a deeper look into what you are seeing.
Ambiguity is his trademark, as you cannot, at first, clearly define the purpose of the painting, usually with very bright an vivid colors that increase the attractiveness of each stroke.
Being a follower of his work, both in literature, (check out his fantastic book “Errors“), and in the plastic art I noticed, and you surely will, that J-Man has a thing for eyes, and clowns. When asked about the subject, the artist said:
“Honestly, I don’t really know. Something about them resonates with me. I used to have a toybox with a Clown on when I was a kid that scared me but as I got older I started to really like them for some reason. Possibly its something to do with vibrant color, staying hidden and emotional ambiguity which are all parts of me.”
Besides his writings, what you will find impressive is the way he uses the hues of colors to manipulated the intensity of the whole piece as required. The blends of colors are simply gripping by their complexity and the clear cut of color barriers (that sometimes are purposefully disrespected), give a roundness, and depth, to his pieces that are very pleasing to the eye.
His “digital/sci-fi” works are stunning, not by their complexity for the most part, but by their simplicity. Clear cut edges, purposeful flaws and clear limits when they should be invisible and “perfect” give a humph to them while keeping them visually neat and ordered.
It’s… amusing, thought provoking even, the fact that the artist seems to WANT to make you know what they truly mean by not giving you a clue whatsoever of their purpose, which makes you ask if they have a purpose at all, and that’s why J-Man is so amazing.
