Six Strings By C. Billie Brunson (The review)

This isn’t the first time reviewing a C. Billie Brunson’s book, in fact, the very first book review on Scribble’s Worth was of “Heart of Malice“.

Since Heart of Malice was launched in 2015, we can definitely say that Mrs. Brunson has done her homework with diligence, because “Six Strings” is a total PUNCHER.

I must admit that I rarely get spooked, specially through a book given that I am well acquainted with names such as Carlos Ruiz and Dean Koontz, so the fact that I got the chills on the first pages is a shocker. C. Billie Brunson comes towards us with a gelid narrative and with an approach that narrows the macabre, as we can see that the author CLEARLY enjoyed herself and went all out as she wrote the scenes that makes “Six Strings” of the contestants for the BEST Indie thrillers of 2021.

One of the remarkable traits of the author is the ability to spread humor, be it light or dark, in circumstances where the reader least expects it, adding to the punch of the whole work that’s narrated with in a dark and pleasant manner.

The narrative is demanding as it masterfully pulls you closer to the next line, making the reader’s eyes race as he switches place with the current character. Very well done.

Unlike most stories, the plot of “Six Strings” isn’t built on a single main character but around two or three that switch dynamics and share the spotlight in varying degrees in a way that is almost imperceptible to the reader, with a clear focus on female characters taking the lead and being pivot to the progression of the story.

C. Billie Brunson CLEARLY was having a BLAST as she wrote the story that when it isn’t giving you the spooks and the chills, it is making you, the reader comfortable with the ambience of gleeful terror, humor and “naive” innocence, as if asking: “how can this POSSIBLY go wrong?” and then giving us, with burst of joy, scenes that caress the macabre, sometimes in a very sensual way.

As I haven’t read a better, more entertaining and pleasurable thriller from the indie community. Six String is a SERIOUS contestant for book prizes this year. AMAZING!

  • Excellent and original dialogue
  • Characters with depth and build to the point of being annoying (in a good way)
  • World-class humor and atmosphere
  • Detailed descriptions and clear imagery

  • Cool action scenes
  • An ending that promises much more for the next book

Cons:

  • None I can think of
