The country is being destroyed little by little. The Polish people are either fleeing, being driven out, or hunted down and killed.
Ferdek and his friends know the importance of their mission – acquire Baby and get “her” out of the country no matter the cost. No easy thing when the German army is deployed to hunt you down. You will bear witness to lives lost to the cause in the process. While they are standing around arguing in one scene of this story a spy gets executed. Any hope you might have harbored while reading that scene of a last-minute save…vanishes in a puff of gun smoke.
