D.C. Gomez is back with a whole new series, The Cat Lady Special, that you are absolutely not going to want to miss out on! The mischief and mayhem that these characters get up to in the great state of Texas are sure to keep you on your toes! So buckle-up buttercup, because you’re about to meet Angela and watch as she takes steps to take her life back!
First glance at this cover you’re not going to know what to expect from the story or the characters in it. Typically when you hear the term “cat lady” you think of someone who has a lot of cats. Yeah, we thought that, too. Unfortunately, for those expecting a gaggle of cats, there are only two. Don’t let that disappoint you though! These two cats, Bonnie and Clyde, will be two of your favorite characters in this book. LOL! They bring a great amount of humor that helps bring a new level of life and entertainment to the story in a truly unexpected and yet organic manner.
When start reading The Cat Lady Special you meet Angela, which is pretty much right off the bat, she’s struggling with a dark choice. She’s got nothing left to lose. Her cheating husband left her, got a new “girlfriend”, left her with little to no money to her name, and in a small town, which has seriously damaged her reputation. So, decisions decisions.
What makes the beginning of this story so entertaining even with the dark tones of its beginning are all the signs that Angela gets to stick around. She’s working up the courage to “walk” away from everything, but today is the day she’s getting phone calls and visitors galore. You will see how funny that will be. Add in the wicked humor concerning the cats and you’re going to be laughing in no time flat.
Interestingly enough Angela invites danger to her doorstep when she asks a passing question in concern to the weapon she has in hand. Two boys who live down the street happen to bring a stranger to her door which then in turn opens a huge can of worms. Are these worms going to be the good kind that brings something positive to her life? Or will they be the last thing she ever does? It’s a hard opportunity to pass up, so…with really nothing to lose…why not? So into the deep end, we go with Angela and the gang!
This story is pure entertainment from beginning to end. Angela simply wants to take back her life after the devastation that she’s been dealing with after the divorce from her ex. She’s no spring chicken, but she’s got the right stuff. However, her family has some secrets, and she’s about to start using them to her benefit. Brace yourself for some jaw-dropping moments. Trust us on this one, Angela’s dad may be one of the “dearly departed” but he had a big one that he kept from those closest to him.
The author’s attention to detail in this book cannot be praised enough. Gomez’s preciseness concerning small towns is absolute perfection. In small towns, everyone knows everyone and the rumor mill is practically a business. Except no one gets paid to run it. LOL! The point is that the minute Angela shows up with the money to pay on her house loan, her mother knows about it before the afternoon is even up! Talk about the rumor mill being on fire!
When it comes to the characters in this story it’s going to be like pulling teeth to pick a favorite. Who are you going to choose? The feisty kitties who’d do anything for their beloved caretaker? Angela’s mother? Or one of the Silver Hair Gang, which consists of a group of mischievous older ladies who start out living at a retirement home? They all bring something dynamic, interesting, and fun to the storyline. Whether it’s Bonnie and Clyde attacking someone for thinking that he can attempt to threaten Angela into doing a deal with him. Or it’s Angela’s mother, Ms. Barbara spitting cold hard facts that leave you with your jaw on the floor and torn between being offended for Angela or just flat out laughing. Or the Silver Hair Gang showing you just how they are more than just a bunch of older ladies piddling around. Trust us, those ladies have plenty of spice left in them and you’re going to love every second of it!
When it comes to characters you’re going to dislike, the author gets a chef’s kiss of perfection. You’re going to think that it’s going to be troublemaker #1. Too bad Bonnie and Clyde put the fear of fur in him. LOL! No, it’s a surprise guest who tries to come in playing the bully thinking that intimidation is going to get him far. Yeah, you’re going to love how that plays out.
Then, there is, obviously, the despicable ex. Now, while the ex doesn’t have any true interaction with Angela, you get a good sense of his personality. He’s trash. Period. How the author orchestrates his part in this story though is going truly elevate the drama and the small-town sense. It’s sheer perfection, to say the least.
The Cat Lady Special gets the title tied into the book in the most purrfect way. LOL! You don’t have to wait long for the tie-in. The author knows how important it is for readers to get that connection as to why the story gets its title. So, when it comes together it is absolutely seamless.
Now, are you wondering where the “How Stella Got Her Groove Back” ties in? Well, for readers craning their necks for that romance…you get a tiny sprinkling of it. This book tends to lean towards more “Breaking Bad” than “Stella,” but honestly…it’s still perfectly balanced. As we all know, Stella’s story wasn’t just about the romance angle. It was about her reclaiming her life, her self-esteem and so much more. That is perfectly and beautifully reflected in Angela’s story. What makes it next level wonderful is how she goes from being alone…to overflowing with people she trusts all around her.
Remember, this book is the beginning of a new series, so things are just getting started for Angela. She’s restarted the family business, but this warning hangs over her head – “Get the money you need, and then get out.” Sounds pretty dark, right? Piques interest in where things are heading for Angela and just how long she’ll be doing this. We’ll just have to wait and see. One thing is for sure though, Angela is going to have some interesting stories to tell. For now, revenge will be sweet.
The Cat Lady Special is one of those books that will grab you by surprise. You’re being gifted with fantastic characters, an engaging storyline, and the sweet kiss of a bright tomorrow. Where things were looking dark and final for Angela, the day breaks showing her that there’s still hope for better if you don’t give up. For readers looking for something fresh, fun, and a new author, D.C. Gomez has just the right book for you.
