Make Money Your Thing! by Kalee Boisvert

Growing up, we are inundated by life lessons imparted by friends, family, and our parents. Whether we realize we’ve received these lessons or not, they can have a lasting impact on our lives. They change how we view things, our attitude toward those things. This impact can be either positive or negative, and correcting our views takes dedicated, diligent work.

But how do you correct something when you don’t even realize it’s holding you back? Realizing you need to take control of your financial life is obvious for those who care to examine it. Kalee explains the journey to financial freedom starts with a long, hard, honest look at your childhood. What lessons did you learn from your parents? Or did they not directly teach you anything about finances? Did your friends have more or less than you? How do these lessons impact your current financial planning and spending? Do you have fears regarding money you didn’t realize you had?

As Kalee explains, you cannot correct your financial course without understanding where you are starting from. This is just the first part of the journey from financial stress to meeting your ultimate financial goals.

Kalee has done the work. She has not only lived her own financial success, but she has also helped many women free themselves from their financial stress. She shares some of their stories throughout the book, and it was a nice reminder that we are not alone in making mistakes. We are not alone in believing it’s too late, or we’ll have to keep working for the rest of our lives.

I have found in self-help books there is a fine line between preaching, pushing a particular viewpoint or method, the author’s belief they and only they are correct, and speaking directly to their audience without treating them like they are less than. It’s a fine line, and Kalee has done a good job of straddling that line.

Make Money Your Thing! is a font of information, but it is not delivered in an info dump which would turn away most readers. She has broken the book down into four well-thought-out parts. At the end of each chapter is a section labeled Taking Action which forces the reader to think about and apply what has been discussed in that chapter. The tasks themselves are not difficult in theory, but the self-examination many of them require is.

As I stated above, the way Kalee represents the information, and the way she explains her thought processes is in no way condescending or patronizing. Rather, it comes across as friendly and empathetic. Many self-help books come across as dry, with an almost narcissistic tone, as though the author needs to prove themselves better. Most self-help books read as though the author is trying to convince you, and even perhaps themselves they are worthy of their high opinions.

This is not how Make Money Your Thing comes across. Kalee discussed her own upbringing, her own limiting beliefs, and her own mistakes while explaining how to correct those mistakes and take control of your finances. And in the end, isn’t that all we want? Someone to show us their imperfections while helping us deal with our own?

Kalee’s book, Make Money Your Thing! is an informative, easy-to-read guide to taking control of your money. It guides you in the self-examination necessary to change thoughts and ideas that have, up until reading this book, held you back, and in fact, have added to your stress. Stress can, in turn, affect your thoughts and ideas about finances. It’s a never-ending circle, and Make Money Your Thing! gives readers a way to break the cycle.

I recommend Make Money Your Thing! for anyone who wants to break out of the financial stress cycle or just wants to learn more possible financial tools. It has been written for the everyday reader, without too much industry terminology that could make her lessons confusing. However, she also has not treated her readers as though they are simpletons. It is an easy, informative read for anyone interested in breaking the cycle or who wants to learn more about financial independence.
