The Traitor, book two in The Order’s Assassin series, continues Sasha’s and Eric’s story. Author D.C. Gomez’s paranormal mystery will pull you along into a page-turner of a novel that will keep you engaged to the end.
Eric and Sasha find themselves embroiled in a variety of dangerous situations. Eric, on the search for a certain witch, is finding that strange things have been going on. Whole families of witches have met with untimely “accidents.” The known incidents are classified as “accidents,” but there are the ones that aren’t being reported at all. Then there is Sasha’s family—who suffers an attack that surprises the entire clan. Who would dare attack them and why? One mystery leads to another and to revelations no one could have expected.
The Traitor is the second in the series, however, even if you haven’t read the first book, you can easily dive into this one and enjoy every second of it. The characters will engage you, while the various mysteries will keep you wondering what is going to happen next.
This book alternates between Sasha and Eric’s points of view in each chapter. Sasha is hot on the mystery of the surprise attack on The Vault. She blames herself for what happened since she wasn’t there. She’s not the only one though. While the important members don’t hold her accountable, there are some who are going to insist on pushing their luck.
Due to the attack, Sasha is pushed back into the field. While this is not something she wanted, you’ll quickly see she excels at what she does. Sasha frequently finds herself in a variety of situations throughout this book, and you’re going to love that she is no damsel in distress. Not by a long shot. Sasha is kickass and knows how to handle herself in the tough situations she finds herself in. Honestly, her reaction to one is absolutely hilarious.

The story starts off with Eric witnessing the destruction of a home that once belonged to a family of witches. He gains some information from the bystanders and one, in particular, seems to know he’s not a human. Interestingly enough, he doesn’t get that same feeling in return. The question arises, and remains unanswered, who was this mysterious woman? Feel free to speculate because it will definitely be interesting if she shows up again at a later time.
Besides Eric and Sasha, the author throws in a nice variety of supporting characters. For readers who’ve read the series from the beginning, these characters—Isis, Bartholomew, Duke, Anita, and many more—will all be familiar. While most of the relationships and connections have already been established, they are still easy to follow for those just diving into this series. It won’t hurt, however, to go back to the beginning and establish a nice foundation with all of the characters.
Readers of this series are going to appreciate how the author sweeps you into the storyline from the very first page. The mysteries the two main characters are investigating draw you in as the pieces of the puzzle come together. Both characters already know, from previous experiences, that no one is to be trusted. Being an assassin, Sasha knows you can’t really trust another assassin. And Eric’s life in the order has taught him that war is never very far off.
Besides the mystery angle of this series, there is a nice amount of humor to keep things from becoming too dour and dark. For some of us, there is no such thing as “too dark,” but for those who enjoy a bit of comedy—there are just the right characters to bring that to light.
Duke is a great supporting character. He’s one of Eric’s go-to guys for information and help and delivers on that with a touch of humor. Of course, the author couldn’t let Duke have all the fun, so there are other characters, like Constantine, who brings a touch of humor to the story. One classic moment is captured in this line, “…you threw a man off the Empire State building… how was that an accident and not your fault?”

Duke truly brings a nice dose of humor to the book in unexpected ways. When a member of the clan goes missing, he offers some strange advice. There are some drawbacks to it, but his rationale is spot on—and humorous. His back and forth with Eric, in one of their later conversations, showcases that Duke is clearly the proactive type you want around when dealing with bad situations.
There are quite a few enjoyable characters throughout this book, and having just one favorite is not going to be an easy task. Is it a bad thing when a supporting character draws you in more than the main character? Some might say yes, but we say—not really. They all are coming together to create an unforgettable story that will keep you coming back for the next book.
Looking for some romance? Well, sparks are flying in this book, but as far as actual romance? You’re going to be left wanting on that aspect. Don’t take that to mean there won’t be any possibility of romance in future books. The potential is definitely there, so only time will tell what happens between these characters. It will definitely be interesting to see.
The author promises more to come in book three, so just settle down and go grab it. Or, go ahead and go for a run and then grab it. LOL!
Lesson of the book: The calm before the storm is the time when your enemies are plotting. Be on your guard.
Cons:
- None unless you are adamantly against cliffhangers LOL
Pros:
- Suspenseful and thrilling
- Engaging characters
- Nice amount of humor
- Page-turner
- Easy to join in series
