Eternity’s Well by Zachary Hagen

Don’t you looove books that start with a bang, people running, screaming and buildings collapsing? Your kind of book? Then read on because this is just THE book for you .

With an INSTANTLY engaging narrative, Zachary Hagen tells us about two emergency responders of a magic city, and what is the emergency they are responding to? Yes, you got it, an explosion of one of the main science labs of the city, and questions start flooding our minds in the midst of the panic, screaming and running. A great start of the book indeed.

Well, one thing is for sure, there are few books that get you interested and eager to read …. the dialogue itself!  It’s engaging, swift and rich, and makes the book go somewhat faster.

The author pulls no punches and doesn’t beat around the bush as things happen swiftly, the plot runs its way through and even without many pages under, we as readers can start to delineated what is happening, but never the why. There is lots of thriller to move us forward, and mystery hangs in the air as we try to understand more and more about the plot. Although open, we feel that there arte many mysteries for us to uncover here as deaths grabs characters that we start to like!

“Heart beats became as precious as gold. Each one waited too long to follow the last.”

The author, proves that although he can explain the plot and move it without grand terms or complications, he can and does create an utterly entertaining experience to the reader as he moves the characters along, and plays with their personalities, motives, and thoughts, bringing you closer and closer to the story itself. A great example of this is Nyx. He is a one-track-minded person and the way he just goes into action is surprising, even for us. With a smile, he will tell you the plan, and start giving the first steps towards it without second thoughts, and then he will turn around and ask you: “are you in or what?” and you will have to follow this guy, hahahahaha. His dynamic with the main character, Elior is simply perfect, as both are stubborn, but only one acts promptly and the other is at times doubting himself and finds resolve in who he needs to find. It’s super interesting how they complement each other and how they work well together and specially how the plot works against them in their quest to get to the Well Of Eternity.

Ok, the book is Fantasy and all, and very creative, but, there is something that has left me raising and eyebrow. The author based michael on Jesus, and his enemy on Lucifer, or the Devil, and that was quite evident, to the point that certain lines and interactions were almost biblical. I felt that an author as good as Zachary, could have gone ot other roots or plot approach in order to tell this story in this regard.

So, we have literally a running water well that hides randomly, a semi-god that is fighting the continuations of a 1000 year war, a pissed off Jinnee, a merman looking for his tail, and a prince looking for his twin, oh, and darws, yeah, dwarfs that are trying to conquer the world? Talk about interesting eh? This book is awesome and this series has much to give to us yet! Love it!

Overall, Eternity’s Well is extremely well paced, entertaining and has a story with large chunks of wow. It ahs dragons, jennies, gods, dwarfs, humans, angels and much more, so if you love magical creatures and a quest to follow, this is the right book for you. I enjoyed it very much.

Pros:

  • Excellent narrative
  • A mostly original plot, as far as I’ve read it
  • An entertaining and simple approach to the characters designs, motives and backgrounds
  • The descriptions of the sceneries were almost perfect and never overwhelming
  • A plot full of mysteries and plot twists
  • A nice ending for this part of the series

Cons:

  • The only thing that put me a little off was the resemblance with well know, biblical stories. I think the author could have done without this approach to the plot.

Small typos on the book. Just one or two that are completely understandable.

Lesson of the book: Don’t share your Kingdom with your enemy
