Remember that old saying: “Never judge a book by its cover?” Well, once again, it has proven itself true.
“I Want to Tell You My Story” by Denise Bowles, is an interesting, quick, extremely relatable account of the hardships, trials, and albatross the author overcame, and how she did it.
Okay, everyone has challenges, right? Yes, but how many of us have a learning disability, diagnosed late in life, were abused as a child, and suffered bullying at the same time? How many of us, put in her position, would simply fold, and quit? That’s why this book is so special and you should take a second look at it.
The way Denise throws the facts about her life to us is phenomenal and brave! And just when we think things can’t get any “better,” she raises the bar of “whoa, that’s hard,” ahahahahahah. Nice!
So many times we don’t take other people’s challenges into perspective and try to measure how lucky we are in comparison to others, and this makes us think that we are the only ones suffering and struggling as if the weight of the world was upon us, and when we read books like this, we have a chance to reflect upon our blessings and be inspired to do more, to do better.
This book, Denise’s message, is not just about her struggles as if she wrote a book for the world to pity her, no. The author wrote this book to help those who are going through a rough patch in life, struggling with their sexuality, or are suffering bullying.
” …. I say: don’t lose hope. The world can be a cruel place but there are good people and good opportunities out there, waiting for you to find them. “
Denise Bowles
She relays how these same challenges that she faced and the things that happened to her made her want to do better for others, and how she used her misfortune as a stepping stone to grow and become the person she is today, find joy, and fulfillment. Inspiring!
“If only I had known back then how much better things would get, I might have found it a little easier to bear.”
Denise Bowles
Okay. The narrative is great. Although this is a memoir, an inspirational memoir, the narrative is fast, factual, sharp, and to the point. There are explanations for everything relevant, we get to know everything we want about the main points, and still make fast progress with the book. Very well done by Denise. *Claps*
Humor and laughs are well present in this book and combined with the light atmosphere of the narrative and its fast pace, well, we have an extremely enjoyable reading experience here.
“There was Mrs. Pearsey, my form tutor, who always seemed to be on the go, bustling around the classroom doing this and that, like the Duracell Bunny.”
Denise Bowles
It’s lovely how the events are told with rhythm and speed, yet the details that make them relevant aren’t left aside, not even for a second, making this a precise account of things and giving just enough time for readers to immerse themselves in the story.
The difficulty of junior school years, the experience of being left aside for being considered the “odd” one, and not receiving attention from the teachers for being new… are experiences that many of us have gone through and know how it feels and the damage it does to our self-esteem, and how much it marks and shapes us, and we loved how Denise did a great job relating her experiences with such honesty.
Admirable was how she, even as a kid, sympathized with others that were in the same situation as her and gathered, invited others to join her gang, so they wouldn’t feel isolated and abandoned for being different. WOW. That’s amazing!
How cool, and rare to find someone that recognizes, remembers, and takes time to show deep gratitude towards those who helped her in the past, calling them by name and telling why she remembers? It’s lovely! Denise made this book lovely all the way. This is a must-read!
It’s telling, how toxic relationships with manipulative people can be dangerous to our kin when we are not aware, or worse, don’t want to be aware, of what is happening. Our decisions, our actions, or lack thereof, will be crucial to our kid’s development and adult personalities, and we as parents HAVE to pay attention to that.
One of the most strikingly beautiful things in this book is how Denise simply accepted who she was, and her “Disability” with a simple thought:
“I wasn’t and still am not thick: I’m simply me; unique and perfectly made, exactly as I am. “
Denise Bowles
How many of us would have the presence of mind to do that and define our lives in an instant?
Making dreams come true and living your passion is truly rare and exciting! This is amazing and it gives hopes of making our dreams come true, with just a little bit of courage. XD WAY TO GO DENISE!! WOOHOO!!!! And congratulations on your Streaming success!!!! WOOHOOOO!!!!
The courage to come out as a Lesbian and the fear of not being accepted by those she knew, the struggle with family and herself.
“…feel immensely proud of the fact that I have not only embraced my true identity but have become an ally for the LGBT+ community.”
Denise Bowles
“It can be really difficult accepting your sexuality, and having people who understand that struggle and make you feel seen is important.”
Denise Bowles
Denise also shows how we, can, no matter what we do or who we are, step into challenges and opportunities that we feel we are not ready for and how that can cause us to live and enjoy experiences that will make us more confident and enjoy life more! It’s so inspiring and cool.
“I Want to Tell You My Story” by Denise Bowles is one of those little books that you will read once or twice a month, just to give you that boost of hope, confidence, and inspiration that you need. The fun we have while reading it is palpable and the jokes in the book make the few moments of reading memorable. Outstanding! Totally recommend.
