The 5 Traits of GREAT Writers

We here at Scribble’s Worth are fortunate enough to be trusted with the reviews of many GREAT authors, from indie to traditionally published, from writers that are just starting out to best-selling authors, with around 30+ books reviewed in detail, and more than 100 books submitted, we have noted a trend when it comes to how great writers do their thing.

1- They tell the story.

It might seem like a no-brainer, but that’s THE BIGGEST difference between newbie, poor and/or mediocre writers and great writers.

Great writers do not beat around the bush trying to embellish their stories, their characters, or try to show the possessions and perks of their characters, no matter the character relevance. They understand that characters are just a vehicle to tell the story and they have to play their part in the narration of the story.

That’s it. A Good examples of this are Mark Leslie with the Werewolf Series, Humphrey Hawksley’s Man on Fire and “The Year of The Slut” by Jennifer Lieberman.

Why? Because they understand that readers don’t have the patience to read a book that is clearly going nowhere. I mean, there are LOTS of other great books waiting, so why waste their time?

2- They tell only what is relevant or what they can and will use later

Great writers don’t get side-tracked with side stories, fact or details that are of no relevance to the plot.

If they tell you something about something, that something has a purpose, just like Tosca Lee does in her fantastic book “The Line Between“, and Marie Powell on “The Last of the Gifted” Series

3- Great writers are not afraid to tell little, but are afraid of not saying a lot.

Great writers do not “fill the book with words“. No. They distil all the message that needs to be told and put it in as little words as necessary. They don’t need to make LONG chapters that go nowhere, or have no purpose. No.

They pack each sentence, each chapter, each part with as much value as possible while saying only the necessary. A GREAT example of this is Craig DiLouie in the Aviator Series, that and Gregory E. Phillips’s “A Season in Lights“.

4- Great writers are BOLD!

A trait of great writers is that they are bold in a specific way: They tell what needs to be told, no matter how much the reader would like to have it otherwise.

They are not afraid to prove wrong, cause conflict, thought or shock. They go against the grain and cut the mustard while they do it. As examples, you have Neil Hemfrey in “My Fatal Futility Shellshock” and “The Year of the Slut” by Jennifer Lieberman, books that are amongst our favourites this year, and on the TOP 10 BOOKS OF THE YEAR!

5- Great Writers HAVE FUN while they are writing.

Something that transpires to readers are the emotions that the writers feel as they are crafting the book. We can’t explain how, it just happens.

If you want to know what is like to have fun while writing and how do readers feel about it, do check the books of C. Billie Brunson, both Heart of Malice AND the AMAZING “Six Strings”, Steven McKinnon’s books, and Kathrin Hutson’s “The Witching Vault“.
