The World Of Thermo – Thermometer Rising By Guy Walton (The Review)

Global Warming! Yes, a scary phrase with even scarier after-thoughts.

Maybe that’s what stops many of us from learning more about it and teach them to the ones that will suffer the most with it, our children, BUT! If that’s the case, fret no more because Mr. Guy Walton has written a great children’s book about it.

Yes, The World of Thermo is an amazingly well illustrated book with short stories of the adventures of Thermo, a thermometer, that goes around the world with his pals earning more about the environment to know how and why things work the way they work.

Although it’s a children’s book, it contains accurate science explained in casual terms that makes understanding easy. Not only that, but historical facts are given and explained in a fun manner and then clarified with footnotes to distinguish fact from fiction.

The thing that I liked the most about this fantastic work by Guy Walton is that as the stories progress, one connects more and more to the main character, Thermo, not because of his jet-engines, but because just like many of us, Thermo is called “little”, something that touches the reader because we are told that we alone cannot change this, but, Thermo, with the scientific knowledge he acquires about the workings of our planet’s climate, can make small actions that result in great outcomes and small victories.

It empowers the reader and gives hope in our own actions. It’s VERY nice.

There is much attention to detail in the story as well, as per example, the question of the main character and the jet fuel that if not addressed properly as it was, would defeat the whole purpose of the book by hypocrisy.

The book refers to the work of many renowned scientists by turning them into characters, including the now very much famous and always active, Micheal Mann.

I have learned more about how the climate works, how the global warming affects the weather events and what can we do about it in 150 pages of reading The World of Thermo than by reading 4 climatology books, and I had a blast while doing so.

No matter your age, I recommend you this fantastic, easy to read book by Guy Walton. If you have a son, daughter, nephew or niece that is under 12, or a climate change denier, this is the best gift you can give them. Top stuff.

Pros:

  • Easy to read stories.
  • The book is written in short-story fashion with scientifical explanations to it with cool reality checks on the end of each story.
  • CONSISTENT storytelling.
  • GREAT characters.
  • Good emotional atmosphere.
  • Attention to detail
  • SPLENDID and CLEAR-CUT illustrations. Top tier stuff.

Cons:

None.

Favourite Character: Thermo.

Lesson from the book:

We are never too small to make a difference.

Final Score: 8.4

    1. Thanks so much for this review. I won’t be legendary, (I guess) until the World of Thermo project gets picked up sells thousands of copies. Please note that all proceeds for book two, World of Thermo…Carbonated, will go to a deserving youth climate organization. So, let’s sell some books, not only for education, but also for all of our young generation’s future.
