The Names That Survived By Mackenzie Littledale

The Names That Survived is a short-story that is… light and deep. A story about identities, names and the acceptance of one’s culture and roots are showcased with their problems and implications that strikes home to the Black community and general immigrants that go to America in hopes to become and be accepted as “white”, while suffering repression and death.

It’s about self-discovery and going back to the forgotten roots, erased by fathers from their children for not being proud of who they are while seeking a “better life”. This beautiful short story clearly points to an issue that we as Blacks face daily, and I think that it makes a good analysis of the internal struggles that go with trying to forget and regain one’s identity and heritage while displaying how beautiful, colored and diverse our origins and cultures are.

Something that I really appreciated while reading is the effort put on the details of typical African behavior showcased perfectly by Mackenzie Littledale (Twitter). It’s something that is hard to put in words, yet the author did that with exquisite perfection and clarity. Very nicely done.

Culture is definitely a theme here, as the author references African traditions and rituals related to names and the meaning of the ceremonies, opening the reader’s eye to the importance of such rituals and how they mark our identity which ultimately define us, preaching and encouraging us to be proud and take a stand for our own roots with boldness.

The Names That Survived is an eye-opening story that challenge us, the African descendants, to discover and re-discover our roots in order to end with the doubts, fear and anger we carry for not knowing who we are, or for not having the sense of belonging in our own communities and in the countries we live in.
Pleasant, light, straightforward and deep to the core, lovely!

Recommended to EVERY African descendant in the world. This short story is a must-read so grab your copy here!

Final Score: 8.7/10
